Re- opening SALE - MOTHER & SON ART SALE TO SAVE TBG!

I must SAVE OUR SPACE, TBG, sell  lots of work to ward off having to close permanently.

The wonderful thing about COVID 19 is that it has brought my 6 year old son, Sparrow and I even closer together.  We isolate and make art  in my studio/gallery TBG - 616 East 9th Street NYC.

TBG has been open in this location for 10 years and is fast becoming Sparrow's studio too. He has been displaying and selling his drawings and paintings. He is joining me is this, our HUGE SE. Soon I will put his name along side mine on the gallery window.

Please join us in our re-opening, you will find us busy creating and do buy a piece of our work, support us in our aim to keep TBG open!

TACTICAL STREAM #5

“FREE”

July 1 - 7

TBG 616 E9th St NYC

What is really “free”? Does everything have a price, even if it it is well concealed, buried in layers of biological and bureaucratic processes. Actual cost takes time to reveal itself, like a clandestine message appearing on a mirror as steam passes.

Climate Change Is the Symptom. Consumer Culture Is the Disease. Colonialism is the genetic trigger.

Our marauding colonizing fore-fathers are in our souls, as our throw away consumerism now rapes to conquer all of earths resources for our unsustainable comfort.

Theresa Byrnes New paintings, FRESH + FOUR DIGGING STICKS 1998, on-view

FRESH 2019

My new series of paintings are about our obsession with newness & ownership - dividing the earth, and packaging everything to give it worth and purpose.

FOUR DIGGING STICKS oil on linen, 7 x 14 foot, 1998

I was accepted into a Yolngu family in remote Arnhem Land in 1991. In Yolngu culture the digging stick represents women, on the community of Yirrkala I have four mothers.

Spring @ TBG

Spring @ TBG

absraction, portrait painting, performance.

Painter and performance artist Theresa Byrnes celebrates spring 2016 with an exhibition of selected works 2005-16, commencing March 26th at TBG (Theresa Byrnes Gallery). The show comprises of Byrnes' abstract paintings, performance ephemera, and portraits. Byrnes began as a figurative painter in 1985 and dedicated herself, almost exclusively (with ocassional portraits) to abstract painting between 1998 and 2015. With abstraction, Byrnes develops ideas that she then embodies through performance.

Works on display include; absract paintings.Byrnes frequently uses non-traditional materials feathers, hair, and earth {2012-16}. Byrnes also obsessively explores the circle as symbol {2007) and layering paper using water flow to mix and transport pigment (2005}. Videos of Byrnes’s early performances shot by Paul Garrin and Anthony Howard, and later performances shot by Kevin O’Hanlon, Christopher Lynch and Bobby Bennett all on veiw.

"Abstraction transcends the physical and aides my escape from the druthers of humanness," remarked Byrnes. For the next two years, I will exclusively paint portraits. Vibrant selections from Byrnes’ old and new portrait collection are on veiw. Commissioned works are available upon request.

Byrnes confesses “I am an abstraction addict.” As well as painting and sketching more portraits these past 6 months, I have also been doing more performance work - both are an exploration of the human spirit through the body. My abstaction is more a study of natures force.

OPEN FRI, SAT & SUN 2-7 or by appointment.
